Oh You-kyeong Korea, b. 1979

Overview

Oh You Kyeong (b.1979) is concerned with what’s invisible yet real. Oh has constantly touched on the importance of realities that are considered nonexistent as they are invisible. The artist intends to have spectators ‘perceive’ visual elements (items that are at the end of their use and are thus abandoned or items that have lost their original function such as ping-pong balls, paper cups, and balloons) as objects with a function completely different from their original use through her artistic intervention. This brings to mind the words of Joseph Beuys, 'Every man is an artist.' Every discipline of humanity can be deemed an artwork, even peeling potatoes if it is practiced consciously. The cardinal element of Oh’s work is to have ‘consciousness’. Oh actively works both in Paris and Seoul after studying art at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris under Professor Giuseppe Penone.
